Why is my image taking so long to process?

Short answer: AI enhancement is literally doing thousands of calculations per pixel. Big image + high upscale + powerful model = longer wait. Here's the full breakdown so you know exactly what to expect. 👇


First — Is It Actually Stuck? 🤔

Before we get into it, let's clear this up real quick:
A job that's still processing ≠ a job that's broken.
Let's Enhance runs in the cloud, which means our servers are doing all the heavy lifting while you sit back and wait. Most images process fast. Some take longer. A few take a while. And that's all completely normal — here's why.


What Actually Affects Processing Time ⚙️

1. The size of your input image

This one's the biggest factor. The more pixels in your original file, the more the AI has to analyse before it can even start reconstructing. A 1MP file and a 20MP file are genuinely not the same workload — not even close.

2. Your upscale factor 🔢

Going 4x? That's a lot more pixels to create than 2x. Going 8x or 16x? Your servers are basically building a whole new image from scratch. The higher the factor, the longer the job — simple as that.
And if you combine a large input WITH a high upscale factor? Yeah, that's when jobs can legitimately take 2+ hours. You're not doing anything wrong — that's just a big ask from the AI. 🧠


3. Which model you're using 🤖

Not all models are created equal in terms of compute:

  • Gentle & Prime — relatively lighter, faster ⚡
  • Balanced & Strong — moderate compute time
  • Ultra — the most powerful, also the most demanding. Expect longer waits especially on large files 🐢
  • Old Photo — moderate, but outputs at ~1MP so the output step is fast
  • Digital Art — generally efficient

Ultra specifically is doing the most intensive reconstruction work of any model — it's worth the wait, but plan accordingly!


4. Stacking extra operations 🧱

Adding Tone Enhance, Colour Enhance, Background Removal, or Face Enhancement on top of your upscale? Each one adds processing steps. The more you stack, the longer the job takes.
This is also why these operations cost more credits — more work, more time, more resources. Worth it when you need them, but switch them off when you don't!


5. Server load ☁️

Sometimes it's just busy. Like, really busy. Our servers process millions of images and if there's a traffic spike, your job might sit in the queue for a bit longer than usual before it gets picked up. This is most common during peak hours.
If your job seems to be sitting in "processing" for longer than the estimates above, it's probably just the queue — not a crash.


When Should I Actually Worry? 😰

Here's the honest rule of thumb:
Normal — job is processing within the time ranges above ✅ Normal — job sits in queue for a bit before starting ⚠️ Worth checking — status hasn't changed in 3+ hours for a standard image 🚨 Contact us — status shows "Failed" or hasn't moved in 6+ hours
If you see a Failed status, don't immediately reprocess! First check:

  • Was your file in a supported format? (JPG, PNG, WebP only)
  • Was your input image within your plan's size limits?
  • Did the output you were requesting exceed your plan's MP ceiling?

Tips to Speed Things Up ⚡

Can't change how fast the AI works, but you CAN work smarter:

  • 📉 Reduce your upscale factor — 2x processes much faster than 4x, and for many use cases it's genuinely enough
  • 🔁 Try a two-step approach — 2x twice can sometimes be faster than one 4x jump, and gives you a checkpoint to check quality
  • 🚫 Turn off extra operations — only use Tone, Colour, Background Removal when you actually need them
  • 📁 Upload PNG not JPEG — counterintuitively, a clean PNG can process more predictably than a heavily compressed JPEG that the AI has to "decode" first
  • 🕐 Process during off-peak hours — early morning or late evening tends to be faster than midday


What About Videos? 🎬

Videos take significantly longer than images — we're talking hours, not minutes. This is because every single frame of your video is processed individually as its own image, then reassembled. A 30-second clip at 30fps = 900 individual frames being enhanced one by one.
For large video projects, we recommend splitting into shorter clips (10–15 seconds each) before processing — it's more manageable and easier to troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.
